There has never been YouTube coverage of a presidential election before. This is different from all other elections. This is, however, similar to the Kennedy/Nixon election because there is a new technology that has influenced the media coverage.

It's smart to use YouTube because everybody watches YouTube. Jin Tsubota

MySpace has become a huge platform for the candidates to reach a younger audience. During the 2004 election, MySpace was just getting started, but it has become a must for the presidential elects to reach even more people.

Using MySpace is a great way to reach the younger audience. MySpace is one of the most used sites in the United States and both Obama and McCain have stated that targeting the younger voters is one the keys to winning this race. Sean Asbury

In the past, there has never been any presidential news or gossip shown on perezhilton.com which is broadcasted for the youth. However, there has always been gossip and news on other slanderous or joke web sites which include the president: Bill Clinton.

http://perezhilton.com/category/john-mccain/

This is huge because there are many people who read perezhilton's celebrity gossip and news.

There is also another popular way of spreading the news with presidential elections throught MTV's website.

This is different in the past because it shows that there are more youth that are becoming intrested in learning about the presidential campaign. This is also different because the youth couldn't really look up information on MTV or websites back in the 40's, as they do today.

There has never been a comic book about the presidents but now, according to my source, there is. It is about their lives rather than humor.

This is very different than anything any other president has ever done for an election. Similarily, there has been stories or books, but never comic books.

Major speeches from the Republican and Democrat National Conventions are now available as free downloads from the iTunes Store.

http://www.apple.com/itunes/store/podcasts.html

This is a great strategy for both candidates. People can download either the audio, the video, or both of select speeches from the conventions straight from iTunes and load them directly onto their iPods for portability. Now people can watch these speeches whenever they want and show whoever they directly on their iPod. The Democrat Nation Convention podcasts are the most downloaded podcasts this week in the iTunes store. Sean Asbury

Similarily, both presidents use bumper stickers as a way for media coverage.

For the date of 8/7/08

This is important because bumper stickers are presented anywhere usually on the bumper of a car or even on a bulliten board. It is a good way to adverstise your vote. This is different to the presidents in the past who didn't have access to stickers.

Differently than the past, there has been a new way of media through self publication of t-shirts. These shirts show who they support in requards to the presidential election.

http://www.electiontshirt.com/images/idemocratic_donkeys/mccain.gif
for the date of 2008.

for the date of 2008.

I think this is a great way to publisize which president people support. It is different and it shows people's views.

The Colbert Report has been a very funny, yet entertaining show. With a comical view on new going on in the world. Yet being one of the most trusted ways to get ones daily news. Steven Colbert and funny antics, has covered the presidential election from the start. He has had both presidential candidates on his show, yet it seems that he has picked his side.

I think it is a great idea that both McCain and Obama take a break from being so serous and take on a funny side. This is a great way to get themselves out to another side of people, seeing the funny side of the candidates will boost there votes.

The media itself has been helping but also hurting the candidates reputation and their campaigns. Articles have showed that this campaign has been hurt by all the media. There are some great aspects of using the media to help your campaign but it can also hurt your reputation as well. For example: the cartoon that was on the cover of the magazine "The New Yorker" that had the personal attacks at Obama was a part of the media that really hurt his campaign.

Michelle Malkin, 9/11/08

I think that using the media has really helped more then hurt this election but there are always the downfalls of being put in the spotlight. The good things that have been said about these candidates are way more overwhelming then the bad.

Differently in the past, there has not been many presidents who have been featured on SNL comedy, besides Bill CLinton. However, senator McCain has been featured. Obama was said to have not been featured because of Hurricane Ike.

for 2008:

I think this is a great way of media coverage because it is an opportunity to let the presidents have fun while still allowing the people to learn about the campaign.

Differently in the past, there has not been many presidential yard signs as a way to express a person's views on the presidential campaign. However, both McCain nd Obama have some.

for 2008:

This is an excellent way to express a person's views and advertise to the public on who the person is voting for.

As mentioned in the other topic, the article focuses on McCain pursuing national TV ads. This is the first time in 12 years that a presidential campaign has made a significant purchase of network TV time.

McCain Ratchets Up National TV Ads

Typically candidates focus their funds on battleground states rather than purchase a lot of TV spots. It makes sense, but to see that this year there is a change suggests that the interest for either candidate is so close that the candidates must spread themselves to gain more votes.

Megan McCain, the daughter of John McCain has written a book about his father. A childrens book about John McCain and his life story and rise to the republican nominee.

This is a very good way to show John McCains story to a very younger crowd. The pictures in the book could attract the children and even draw the parents in as they read to to their children. From what i could find this has not happened in the past by a daughter of the candidate. It is a very smart move by Megan to make a book for children about her father.

In the past, candidates relied on face-to-face contact in order to spread their policies and establish their footing. More recently media campaigns are centered around newer forms of technology that eliminate the person-to-person interaction. However, with the introduction of mediums such as MySpace and Facebook, voters are interacting together both digitally and face-to-face.

As mentioned by others, to become involved in social networking is a smart plan of action. I mean people are interacting with one another once again, a sign that people are not turning their backs on the government and want to be involved.

Obama and McCain are both considered "cool" media figures. By cool I mean that the experience does not overwhelm the senses and leaves room for the audience to fill in and complete the picture. It has been 20 years since "cool" political figures have taken the stage.

It is refreshing to have new "types" of candidates. The media and the general public are trying to figure these two out (though by different means). It is still early yet, but both candidates are reflecting the indistinct persona of Calvin Coolidge.

Barack Obama’s now-famous text-message announcement of his VP pick reveals something about the candidate that should really worry the Republicans. What it reveals is not that he’s a smart technologist. If he was, he would have known that sending 10 million SMS messages at the same time is pretty much guaranteed not to work; it’s not designed for that. What it does reveal is that this is probably the smartest marketing campaign we’ve seen in decades.

http://gigaom.com/2008/08/24/what-obamas-text-message-campaign-reveals/

i think that using text messaging is a great way to get you campaign through to all americans. most americans today have and do text more than they talk on the phone.
