Sean Asbury
One of the differences between Obama and McCain are that Obama is going after a lot of the African American crowd. He is posted on many African American web sites and has done many electorial speeches in predominantly African American towns and churches.
I think that by Obama reaching out to all these different origins of people that his chances of being elected as the next president are much higher than McCain's. He is using the resources (such as media) to accomplish his task of being president. Also, you can tell that in his speeches he adjusts to that certain crowd and can relate to many things that he says.
Obama has targeted a younger crowd for his election. the younger crowd is attracted to Obama much more then McCain. Obama did a speech in Denver that was viewed mostly by younger people and was filmed on mtv. This electorial speech was fun and exciting which not only included Obama's speech but also included bands. This was just a few things of many that attracted the younger crowd.
I think that Obama is going towards the right direction because he is targeting the age groups that have the least amount percentage wise in votes. So he is not only getting votes from everyone but he is also eliminating the non voting age group and pulling them towards his election.

Both McCain and Obama have been utilizing advertisements on network TV for promoting their campaigns. In the following article, McCain is in the lead for the amount of ads being purchased on network TV.
McCain Ratchets Up National TV Ads By: Ira Teinowitz http://www.tvweek.com/news/2008/09/mccain_ratchets_up_national_tv.php
When I do watch TV I would have to say that I see more McCain (almost exclusively) ads than Obama. There is so much talk of Obama using different means to get to his audience, yet it is McCain who uses a more traditional or classic method. The time slots that McCain has chosen are also broadening his target audience. For instance, "Good Morning America," "Nightline," and "World News Tonight" are a few of the shows that will feature the ads. All of which are on during various times of the day and use various ways to deliver their news. Lea Duggar
Obama and McCain are about even in the number of TV viewers.
McCain, Obama About Even in TV Audiences Associated Press http://www.wjbf.com/midatlantic/jbf/news_index.apx.-content-articles-JBF-2008-09-08-0018.html
Aside from McCain's commercials, Obama has been dominating TV programming (for the most part). I found it to be quite interesting that both candidates have about equal viewership for televised speeches (numbers that just so happen to be higher than The American Idol season finale). Lea Duggar
McCain uses the press to separate himself from the Bush administration.
The Press Helps McCain whitewash Bush By: Eric Boehlert http://mediamatters.org/columns/200809090014
Both political parties have their "black sheep," or members they are reluctant to associate with for some reason. The Democrats have Bill Clinton and the Republicans have George W. Bush. During a very critical time for the Republicans, McCain was able to break away any affiliation with the Bush administration through the use of the media(by pretty much ignoring Bush). How clever is that? Though the strategy was not quite part of McCain's media campaign, he did take advantage of it and used it to further his own agenda. Lea Duggar
Obama has been the center of attention in most news and entertainment outlets (being significantly featured in 79% of newspaper stories following his primary victory). Whereas McCain has been overlooked and brushed aside by the mass media.
ASP: It Takes Two to Tangle It Takes Two to Tangle. New Republic, 9/10/2008, Vol. 239 Issue 4, p1-1.
Obama has been under the media's magnifying glass, being nitpicked for anything and everything. Being constantly featured makes Obama a more recognizeable candidate, as if he were a movie star. However, being out of the spotlight has its advantages as well. Since McCain is not being picked apart to the same degree as Obama, he is able to avoid being questioned about his past. For instance, in class there were mentionings about McCain's iffy military career. Or as the article points out, the swift change of his political positions when he decided to run for the Republican nomination. Lea Duggar
Both Obama and McCain have both been on the popular woman's show the view. This is a very interesting and challenging move. All of the women on the show have their own option, and aren't afraid to tell the world about it either it be positive or negative.

I think this is a good movie by both Obama and McCain. This could either boost their votes from the women voters, or hurt them. The women hosts on the view are very opposite, which makes the show very interesting and entertaining.
Obama has recently took a break for them presidential run and decided to take a vacation to Hawaii. This could either work for Obama saying, hes a family man and is spending time building a relationship with this family like all Americans should do. Or it could show fatigue and show that Obama cant handle the pressure.

I think this works for Obama. It shows that he cares about his family and showing the American public that he is a family man, and cares about family structure. Yet some may not like the idea of him taking a break from the campaign.
Political banners are a very good way to show who you are voting for. Most of these banners are shown on peoples lawns, and show who they have chosen for President. The banner can show a positive reimbursement for the candidate or it could but down the opposite candidate that they are against.
It has been an American tradition to show pride in who one has voted for by putting a banner on their lawn. These banners can also be very funny or very negative and could cause controversy. Yet still a very good advertisement that the supporters pay for.
It seems now that the media is covering what the candidates wife's are wearing. The candidates wife's nearly go everywhere their husbands go. Supporting them on their campaign. But recently it seems that people care about that the wife's are wearing.
Michelle Obama's dress http://www.palmbeachpost.com/business/content/business/epaper/2008/06/19/0619chicos.html Author:ALLISON ROSS Date:Thursday, June 19, 2008
I think this is a very funny topic. But if you look at it deeply wouldn't one rather look at a nicely dressed candidates wife, or a poorly dresses wife not caring what she looks like beside her husband. It seems that year after year the media seems to be going after fashion to make the candidates look better.
Obama is successful at his internet campaign because he approaches his audience as if he were selling a consumer product. He meets his audience where they go on the web and he delivers his message of change in a clear and consistent manner. McCain on the other hand doesn't utilize the internet in the same way because most Republicans are less likely to have broadband internet and he doesn't have to gather donations.
ASP: Obama's far-reaching tack holds lessons for his rivals Obama's far-reaching tack holds lessons for his rivals. By: Shiffman, Denise. Advertising Age, 4/14/2008, Vol. 79 Issue 15, p36-36.
ASP: The Online Race The Online Race. By: Blanchfield, Theodora A.. Campaigns & Elections, Nov2007, Vol. 28 Issue 11, p12-13.
Both candidates are "selling" themselves to us, in a manner of speaking. But Obama has taken steps that McCain hasn't really touched, or at least not with the same techniques. He is utilizing blogs, social networks, downloadables (such as buttons, ringtones, wallpapers, etc.), YouTube videos, and podcasts. It is interesting to see a reasoning for why the Republicans are not using the same methods as the Democrats. It makes sense as well. It is silly to invest time and energy into something if it will not be beneficial. Lea Duggar
McCain, 5-foot-9 and spry at age 71, has a ramrod posture, quick movements and clenched fists; he darts from here to there as if spurred forward by jolts of energy. The combination can make him come across as stiff, despite his remarkably informal and off-the-cuff approach.
Obama, age 46 and lanky at 6-foot-2, seems to glide, his head held high, his gait long and his arms swinging freely at his sides if not buried in pockets. His laid-back mannerisms can seem overly casual, and they belie his highly scripted and picture-perfect appearances.
I THINK THE WAY YOU PRESENT YOURSELF TO THE MEDIA HELPS HOW THE MEDIA PRESENTS YOU. SINCE OBAMA IS SHOWN AS A TALL SKINNY AFRICAN AMERICAN WHO JUST SO HAPPENS TO BE YOUNGER THAN HIS OPPONENT HELPS HIS CAMPAIGN AND WEAKENS MCCAINS.

Obama and McCain are about even in the number of TV viewers.

Aside from McCain's commercials, Obama has been dominating TV programming (for the most part). I found it to be quite interesting that both candidates have about equal viewership for televised speeches (numbers that just so happen to be higher than The American Idol season finale).

McCain uses the press to separate himself from the Bush administration.
The Press Helps McCain whitewash Bush

Both political parties have their "black sheep," or members they are reluctant to associate with for some reason. The Democrats have Bill Clinton and the Republicans have George W. Bush. During a very critical time for the Republicans, McCain was able to break away any affiliation with the Bush administration through the use of the media(by pretty much ignoring Bush). How clever is that? Though the strategy was not quite part of McCain's media campaign, he did take advantage of it and used it to further his own agenda.

Obama has been the center of attention in most news and entertainment outlets (being significantly featured in 79% of newspaper stories following his primary victory). Whereas McCain has been overlooked and brushed aside by the mass media.

The two men even carry themselves differently.
